Your Net Worth is Not Your Self Worth

The Scoreboard

I update my net worth spreadsheet on the 1st of every month.

It is a ritual. It forces me to face reality.

  • Did I spend too much?
  • Did the market tank?
  • Did my savings rate hold up?

The Danger Zone

It is easy to get addicted to the number. When the market is up, you feel like a genius. When it is down, you feel like a failure.

Remember: The goal is not the highest number. The goal is freedom.

If having a higher net worth makes you anxious or miserly, you have lost the game. Money is a tool to be used, not a high score to be hoarded.
